Privacy Policy

This policy describes the information collected when someone uses Nottoway County Criminal History, the reasons it may be processed, and the limited circumstances in which it may be disclosed. Accessing or using the website signifies acceptance of these practices.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or place submitted through a search tool is sent directly to the outside company that operates that tool. The provider processes the request and supplies its response. Nottoway County Criminal History does not keep or record those search terms on its own systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email sent to us may be retained long enough to respond and maintain the related correspondence. It is not shared beyond our organization unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.

Data We Gather Automatically

Our servers may receive routine technical information whenever a visitor opens a page, including:

  • The date and time of each page request
  • The referring website, when one is provided
  • Pages viewed and the time spent on them
  • The visitor's device type and operating system
  • Browser name and version
  • The device's assigned IP address

Cookies and Analytics

Small files known as cookies help measure how visitors move through the website, such as which pages receive traffic and where a visit ends. Analytics providers may combine that activity into summary statistics. A browser can reject or remove cookies, though doing so may change how some website functions behave.

What We Do With This Data

  • Display advertising that may reflect visitor interests
  • Diagnose errors and other technical problems
  • Understand which resources are useful and which need improvement
  • Route a submitted query to the appropriate search partner
  • Operate the website and maintain acceptable performance

No Criminal-Record Data on File

Nottoway County Criminal History does not compile, maintain, or sell a database of personal criminal-record information. Its content identifies the official custodians of Nottoway County records, including local courts, law-enforcement offices, the Virginia Department of State Police Criminal Justice Information Services Division through CARE and CCRE, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. Virginia Code § 19.2-389 controls dissemination of CCRE criminal-history information; nothing collected about website visitors is used to assemble a consumer report or a record about another person.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies operate the search boxes that appear on the website. Information entered into one of those tools is subject to that provider's privacy policy rather than this policy. Each provider controls its retention and disclosure practices, so visitors should review those terms before submitting a query.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to Nottoway County offices, Virginia court systems, state agencies, legal-aid resources, or outside search services. Once a visitor follows an external link, the destination's privacy policy governs the visit. Review that policy before providing personal information.

Advertising providers may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select interest-based advertisements. We do not operate that tracking infrastructure.

Who Might See Your Data

Personal data is not sold. Information may be disclosed in limited settings to:

  • Government or law-enforcement bodies responding to a valid legal order
  • Advertising networks that deliver ads on the website
  • Analytics vendors that measure traffic and performance
  • Search providers that process a query the visitor chooses to submit

How We Protect Your Data

Reasonable, commonly used safeguards protect information collected through the website. No internet-connected service can guarantee absolute security, however, so a breach or unauthorized access cannot be ruled out entirely.

Users Under 18

The website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger than 18. If information from a minor is identified, a request may be made through the Contact page for its prompt deletion.

Your Data Rights

Privacy rights can depend on a visitor's place of residence and the law that applies. The Virginia Freedom of Information Act (VFOIA), Virginia Code § 2.2-3700 et seq., concerns access to records held by public bodies, while Virginia Code § 19.2-389 governs dissemination of CCRE criminal-history information. Those laws do not turn this private website into a government record custodian. Visitors may still ask us to:

  • Stop specified forms of processing where an opt-out is available
  • Delete personal information we retain about them
  • Correct inaccurate personal information
  • Provide a copy of personal information held by us

Updates to This Policy

This privacy policy may be revised as practices or legal requirements change. The revised version will be posted here with a replacement effective date, and visitors should review it periodically.
